Subotica from A to Z

R

Radijalac  is an urban district, located between the centre of the city and the Sports Hall. Along the middle of this district, there is an 800m pedestrian avenue. Traffic roads along both sides of the avenue  lead to the Sports Hall and to the Dudova šuma-leasure park.

Raichle Mansion  at present  a modern art gallery building, one of the most splendid art nouveau style buildings in Subotica. It was named after Ferenc Raichle, the owner and designer of the building. This architect from Subotica, educated in Budapest, built the house as his family home in 1904, although both he and his family lived there only for a short time. Namely, he went bankrupt and had to leave the house in 1908, so his house with all the furniture and artifacts was sold. Raichle Mansion is considered a master piece from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, on which Ferenc Raichle demonstrated  his craft and talent as a leading architect. The most lavish decorative ornaments on the facade  were made of the famous Zsolnay tiles, while the base was built of pink marble. Venetian glass was used  for the stained glass windows.

Rajić Blaško (1878-1951)  used to be a Croatian minister in Bačka District, a writer and a politician. He was born in Subotica. By the end of his studies, he became a minister in 1902, firstly in the Dušnok Croatian village in South Hungary, in 1902 and then in Santov, in 1904. He continued the vicarage in Subotica, his birth place, in St Theresa parish, until 1911; after that he was appointed as a vicar and was at the head of the St Rokus Parish, where he stayed till his death in 1951.
He is the author of the Duhovna mana (Spiritual Flaw)  prayer book. With the latter he achieved the greatest work in pastoral, social and cultural field. He interceded in agile manner for Bačka to become a part of a unified South Slavic State. In 1919 he was a member of a delegation of the Bunjevac people sent to Paris for a peace conference with foreign diplomats. He was at the head of the Bunjevac-Šokac Party, and afterwards at the head of the People’s Party of Vojvodina, only to turn towards Stjepan Radić, whose HSS (Croatian Peasant Party), he strongly supported. During the Second World War his activities ceased. He returned to his regular vicar life in 1943, where he remained till his death. He was the founder of many catholic associations, such as:  Katoličko divojačko društvo, Radničko i učeničko križarsko bratstvo, Katolički krug- Educational Society, Charity Community of Bunjevci and Croatian Cultural Community, and together with Lajčo Budanović he also founded Matica of Subotica.
He  made the Dužijanca Festival, a hitherto only folk tradition, into a Church manifestation. Thanks to him Prelo also took place. He started the former Subotičke Novine weekly in 1920. He wrote songs, short stories and articles. Rajićevi Dani-manifestation  is organized as a tribute to him.

Rogina bara  is an ancient swamp on the east side of  medieval Subotica, later  a military fosse. After some time, though, it started to hamper  the development of the city, thus the Royal Chamber  made a decision to plant willows there. Later,  in 1794, an order was passed to drain the swamp and sell the land for plots. In spite of all  efforts in drainage, some water remained there. During the 40’s of the 20th century, kids used to swim in it and boats sailed on it. In 1888, the City Council passed a decision to cover the remaining of the swamp with sand, to build a park and a judiciary building there. For a year and a half, sand was  brought and plots were  sold at a location where present day’s most beautiful buildings built – today’s Korzo.
