Subotica from A to Z

Sarić Ivan (1876-1966) a renowned sportsman in Subotica, who did cycling, motors and cars. He is the first man from the region, who flew in 1910, in a plane constructed by himself. The brushwood plane seating is preserved and found at the Aeronautics Museum in Surčin. He made the airplane after first having seen it in Paris in 1909. In 1917 he constructed a model of a helicopter, which showed great results during trials.

Sándor village (Aleksandrovo Village)  is a village at the south part of the city. At the end of the 18th century this was still one of the fallows of Subotica that was inhabited by 1804. It is certain that Sándor village rests on top of an unknown medieval village, for  remains of an old church and village were found in its vicinity, dating from 11th to 14th century. There used to be a village there in the Bronze Age and  in the Sarmatian period, as well.

Art nouveau is typical art style of Subotica. Striving to surpass the existing conventional academism, wealthy residents of Subotica opened their doors to the new art and architecture of art nouveau at the beginning of the 20th century. The following architects left their marks on the new image of the city: Ödön Lehner, Ferenc Raichle  and the Dezső Jakab and Komor Marczell tandem. They decorated Subotica with ornaments, folk motifs, wrought iron, color and ceramics. Modern day architects combine modern architecture with tradition . The Green Fountain at the centre of the city was built from the famous Zsolnay tiles in 1985, and it is decorated by some elements of the art nouveau.

Senta (village in Subotica) is the south part of town, between Senćanski Road and Braća Radić Street, in the surroundings of the St George Church. The old Senćanski Road ranged over from Senjak (Puškin Square) through  Senćanska gate and lead to Senta. Although it was never paved with asphalt, this road can be used to get to Senta, even today.

Spartak – Jovan  Mikić (1914-1944) he was a commander  of Subotica’s Partisan Unit and an outstanding athlete of  the National Team of Yugoslavia, in athletics. In the period from 1932 to 1939, he was our best pent athlete and decathlete, jumper, disc and hammer thrower. He was killed on 10th  October 1944, on the Liberation Day of Subotica, at the railway station by a Hungarian soldier.

Stained Glass

Stantić, Đuro (1878-1918) was the first sportsman of Subotica and world champion; winner of an Olympic medal.

Subotica’s Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1908, it hosted numerous concerts with artists-soloists of top world class. Regretfully, during the recent decades many excellent musicians left the city, thus the Philharmonic had to reduce its activities. 

Subotica Fertilizer Plant – a unique technical – technological facility for the production of complex non-organic fertilizers, type NPK and NP.    The estimated annual production capacity is 500 thousand tons of fertilizers. The decision to set up the plant, as well as, the investment programme, was reached in 1977. The plant was opened for trial production in 1986 - 1987.

Summer Stage in 1950, a modern Summer Stage made of unhewn stone was built in the mulberry forest of Palić, and since then, this stage hosted many artists and productions. Nowadays this is a beautiful place under the clear sky, a place were the Palić Film Festival and other cultural events  take place.

Synagogue  in Subotica, in architecture it represents one of the most beautiful art nouveau style buildings  of the region. It was built in 1902 in Hungarian art nouveau style, according to the design by Dezső Jakab and Komor Marcell. The building’s impressive image is created by lavish ornaments on the exterior and the interior and is dominated by stained glass. Although the stained glass windows are dilapidated,  they  still reflect the beauty and skill of masters from old times. The World Monument Watch organization listed the Synagogue, for three times subsequently, among the one hundred most endangered monuments in the world. The Synagogue is a listed cultural monument and a memorial for 4000 Jews from Subotica who were exiled and murdered in the Fascist concentration camps, during the Second World War.
