Vermes Lajos (1860-1845), an aristocrat from Palić that organized Palić Sports Games, the antecedent of Olymphic Games. Some fourteen years  after that event Pierre de Coubertin started the Olymphic Games in Athens. Palić Olymphic Games were organised in the summer and winter, untill 1914, when the war interrupted the organisation of these sport competitions. Lajos Vermes was also the founder of the Subotica Gymnastics Assosiation.

Vrlić Subota, a courtier of Jovan Nenad the Emperor, his treasurer and vicar, the sculpture of whom is located in the centre of the city.
